Safety audits, risk assessments and safety training
A Reflective Approach to Safety

Our approach to safety was transformed when we stumbled onto
some behavioural economic papers around 10 years ago. It
should be noted that these behavioural papers we looked at were
very different to the theories behind the explosion in
Behaviour-based-safety (BBS).

This new information challenged us to review our existing
approaches for both safety training and even accident
investigations, and to question some of the most basic safety
principles. The results of this reflection and some hard work
allowed us to significantly improve our ability to help our clients,
and most importantly make work-places safer.

The quickest way to achieve quick improvements is to review
worker environments and begin to understand how these
situational factors affect decision making of managers, engineers
and workers. Here it is important to highlight that we are not
reviewing work-sites to simply identify hazards, but we are also
looking at how the conditions are influencing employee thinking.
We then use this information to make low-cost modifications in
work environments that help managers and frontline workers to
make better decisions, which not only improves safety, but also
increase productivity.
